You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!

I have the privilege of working with people from all across the world, and one thing I notice often when I do “coaching” sessions, is that people will often defend their limitations and beliefs to the point that they believe that their way is the correct way. Well, clearly if it were correct, they would not be sitting with me.

Transformation will happen when we are willing the accept the truth about ourselves. That truth, will reveal something that you may not like. But the truth will set you free. This does mean that you earn a ticket to heaven or that you get out of jail free. No. It means you are no longer shackled by the limitations of your beliefs that you once held onto.

Healing or transformation has the following levels when you say:

  1. Thank you for showing me the truth.
  2. I acknowledge that there is something wrong with my thinking or actions. This is called awareness.
  3. I accept that this has been a mistake.
  4. I forgive myself or others for this thought or action.
  5. I am willing to choose new thoughts and actions.
  6. I am open to a new way of living.

This process can take time. I like to think of truth as a headlight of a car. If this headlight does not work at night, you will drive off a hill or onto oncoming traffic. But the light shows you where you are. This is truth. You use this bit of information and move into awareness. You become aware of the road ahead. You then can choose to turn left or turn right.

I love this story about truth and lie. I do not know the author, but it is a powerful story.

According to a 19th century legend, the Truth and the Lie meet one day. The Lie says to the Truth: “It’s a marvellous day today”! The Truth looks up to the skies and sighs, for the day was really beautiful. They spend a lot of time together, ultimately arriving beside a well. The Lie tells the Truth: “The water is very nice, let’s take a bath together!” The Truth, once again suspicious, tests the water and discovers that it indeed is very nice. They undress and start bathing. Suddenly, the Lie comes out of the water, puts on the clothes of the Truth and runs away. The furious Truth comes out of the well and runs everywhere to find the Lie and to get her clothes back. The World, seeing the Truth naked, turns its gaze away, with contempt and rage.

The poor Truth returns to the well and disappears forever, hiding therein, in shame. Since then, the Lie travels around the world, dressed as the Truth, satisfying the needs of society, because, the World, in any case, harbours no wish at all to meet the naked Truth.
